previous photos from estonia were all within the old city walls. outside of them, there is a new contrast between a different generation gap of architecture: the newer and the newer, if that even makes sense. textures, colors, and materials have changed significantly in the way of application in just a few decades, while in the end, pragmatically speaking, we get walls and roofs, doors and windows, visual attractions.

the power of perspective is.. deceiving. even though you can tell after a bit that the st. olaf’s church only has one tall steeple, when the 4 remaining ones standing one its corners are only like one-tenth of its size. it is always important to keep your perceptions clear and know what the reality is, but my point here is that reality can be flexible too, where your imagination leads to a different and fresh mindset.

just imagine being atop one of the (once) tallest ancient european churches. the strong sea breeze rushing inland with soft clouds that spread, diffuse and fade. feel the wind brushing through your ears as your heart pounds heavily from climbing the steep and narrow stairwell. turn your sight from the sea to the city and find that balance of harmony between them and the skies.

within the interior of the ancients walls of tallinn lies a unesco world heritage site. completed by the richest of materials, textures and a balance of emotions, this historial city is adapted from the eighteenth and nineteenth century into our modern day. it is possible to read stories from the marks made in time by the different influences and cultural happenings.

this is a city view from the highest point in tallin, estonia: st. olaf’s church. this was the tallest church from 1549 to 1625, still serves as a baptist church, and you can go up to the tower for this amazing view for just 30kr or a dollar. the view shows the contrast between the new and the old: modern grey and cold buildings compared to the colorful roofs and stone built structures.

walking down cobblestone streets of old town tallinn, observing every single detail of this beautifully preserved town i was surprised of how welcoming this small city is. as i stood in an inner city plaza, surrounded by old churches little cafes and restaurants, i spun in circles amazed of the incredible environment old tallinn had to offer. i turned around to find this pretty hostess who stared at me as i “discreetly” snapped a photo of her from a distance. i expected a very uncomfortable and disgrunting reaction, but instead i got a very genuine smile.

one of the most interesting homes i noticed in this old medieval city. the different colors, layers, textures and details in this photo provide the house with so much character, rich and sophisticated through history. notice the small mail latch in the door, the window in the window and just the collaging of wooden panels that cover the façade. it almost tries to reflect upon their history as estonia has been run by so many different cultures and powers.
happy birthday carlos.
