today is the anniversary of the day in which guatemala, el salvador, honduras, nicaragua and costa rica jointly declared their independence. it was supposed to be a misty morning many days (weeks) after this day that the official letter of independence reached san jose by horse from guatemala. coincidentally, mexico shares the same date too.

are those c’s or r’s..? either way, these crates, thousands of them, belong to one of the first lines of distribution of farmer fresh produce and fruits. it is basically a midnight market where secondary distributors can gather low price national products for the san jose metropolitan area. i did forget what fruit these were for.

you can cook them or fry them. you can make chips out of them. these are one of the most traditional ingredients to a complete costa rican meal, not to mention the americas in general. this photo was taken in the cenada farmer’s market here in san jose. heredia to be exact.
